Could a Mexican Martin Custom X model Dread be buffed out to a gloss, by polish sand and buff? |

X model Martins have a HPL back and sides, spruce top. At least the one that I just repaired did. The finish on the top looks pretty thin, I don't know if there is enough there to buff, I rather doubt it. The back has a mahogany looking wood grain in the outer layer - I don't think there is any finish at all. Can it be buffed? I don't know, probably wouldn't hurt to try. The one I worked on had been dropped and the back to side seam had been split. A piece of the back had been broken out - I was able to put it all back together with CA. I lightly sanded some of the edges of the broken piece and got a white line indicating that I had sanded thru the outer "wood" layer. I did some drop filling with CA, scraped back level and went over the repair with 0000 steel wool to restore the satin finish. |

There is no finish on those Formica guitars. The white line was the bottom of the plastic laminate on top of the phenolic base. It's basically kitchen counter material..... |
